I realised that in my 13 years of schooling HIV has only come up now... after a class discussion where it became painfully obvious that the common idea amongst my friends was that HIV is only for "gay men and African babies" I figured it's something that definitely needs to be addressed because that kind of ignorance can be dangerous.

The study guide offers an introduction to teachers, parents and students about AIDS in the world. The guide includes activities that are designed to encourage students to explore the issues surrounding AIDS from a human rights perspective as well as providing basic factual information.

15 Million Opportunities to Shape the World

He is a young man from Kenya, who's story about the devastating repercussions of AIDS is real. Since the age of 10, Kevin Sumba has grown up alone; an orphan left behind when both of his parents died from AIDS.In July 2007 Kevin, with the support of YEAH, visited schools across Sydney and Melbourne. YEAH Resource: Share my Secret:

Untold Stories of Young Australians

Background: This resource features a series of powerful animated stories narrated by Australian children and teenagers living with HIV; one of the largest issues impacting on the health of teenagers worldwide. In 2006, the ABC's Radio National ran a story on HIV Positive Teenagers in Australia which brought this issue to light. While the interviews received broad community interest, the portrayal of the stories was limited to radio, highlighting that the number one issue facing these young people is disclosure of their 'secret.' YEAH has partnered with the Victoria College of the Arts to produce a series of short animated films using the interviews with HIV positive teenagers as the soundtrack in order to bring these poignant and touching stories to life. The vignettes can be watched individually or in succession, and emphasize the need for building social inclusion and community understanding of HIV’s impact on young Australians.

Contents:

  • 1 x DVD containing: (Region 4 PAL)
  • 4 individual short animated stories, a montage of animations set to a compilation of  interviews, a 5 min feature showing the responses of groups of high school students to the animations during National Youth Week
  • 1 x Report produced from the National Youth Week focus group session including a student evaluation template that can be used in conjunction with the animations
