AGENTS of YEAH
Background on Agents of YEAH
Peer education is considered one of the most effective vehicles for promoting awareness of messages that are difficult to convey in traditional teacher driven environments. When it comes to sexual health and information on STIs and HIV, young people influence each other and also rely on their peers for information.
An incredible opportunity exists to engage, educate and empower young people in the community to become leaders of social change by equipping them with the skills to become youth HIV/AIDS and Sexual Health Peer Educators.
In 2009, YEAH has trained and supported young people to become Agents of YEAH. These young people are ambassadors of YEAH and deliver HIV and youth sexual health focused workshops to their peers and other young Australians aged 15-18 in their community.
The Agents of YEAH Pilot Program has been funded by the Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing and
directly supports the Australian Government’s 2009 Sexual Health Campaign for the National STIs prevention program and social marketing strategy.
Graduates from the program are trained and qualified as ‘Agents of YEAH’ to:
Represent YEAH and advocate for youth HIV/AIDS and sexual health awareness
Deliver community based peer education workshops on HIV/AIDS and Youth Sexual Health
